Excitement erupted
within the Boston University community on Wednesday night. Miss USA Olivia
Culpo has been crowned the Miss Universe 2012 winner. Originally from Rhode
Island, Culpo is currently a Boston University sophomore. And now, pageant
royalty. She has been handed down the crown by Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes
of Angola, having been picked from 88 other women who flew in from around the
world to compete.
Miss Universe 2012 took place in Las Vegas’ own Planet
Hollywood Resort & Casino, and was hosted by Bravo’s Andy Cohen and E!’s
Giuliana Rancic. Tonight marked the 61st anniversary of Miss Universe—the
world’s biggest beauty pageant.
Twenty-year-old Culpo strutted down the stage in a purple
and blue bikini and a red velvet grown. She was later asked by the judges about
her regrets, and told the judges she wished she had never picked on her
siblings.
Coming in third place was Miss Venezuela Irene Sofia Esser
Quintero, while second place went to Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon.
The last Miss USA to win the Miss Universe pageant was Brook
Lee in 1997. Because of that, Culpo’s goal was to break the country’s losing
spell.
The Miss Universe 2012 panel of judges included: singer Cee
Lo Green, San Francisco Giants player Pablo Sandoval, “Iron Chef” star Masaharu
Morimoto and U.S. Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings.
When
Sandoval was asked on the red carpet whether he found playing in the World
Series or judging the beauty pageant to be more difficult, he responded both
were hard, according to the Associated Press.
Before
handing off her crown, Angola did give tonight’s leading ladies advice. “Be
calm and smile,” she said. “Smiling helps a lot. Even though they are not relaxed,
the judges will think that they are.”
As the 2012 Miss Universe winner, Culpo will receive an
undisclosed salary, brand new wardrobe, a limitless supply of beauty products
and a luxury apartment in New York City.
The question then remaining is: Will Culpo be returning to
Boston University?
